What does Profhilo do to your face?

Profhilo is one of the most requested treatments in aesthetic medicine, and one of the most frequently misunderstood. Patients often arrive expecting it to lift the cheeks or fill a hollow, having seen it described online as a liquid facelift. It is not that, and understanding what it genuinely does is the difference between being delighted with your result and feeling that something did not work.

Profhilo improves the quality of your skin. It does not change the structure of your face. That distinction sounds small, but it determines whether this is the right treatment for what is actually bothering you.

What Profhilo Is

Profhilo is an injectable made entirely of hyaluronic acid, with no cross-linking agents added to hold it in place. Each syringe contains a very high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid in a low viscosity formula, which means that once it is injected it does not stay where it is placed. It spreads.

This is the opposite of how a dermal filler behaves. A filler is designed to hold its shape in one location so that it can build a cheekbone or fill a groove. Profhilo is designed to disperse through the tissue and act across a broad area, which is why it is classed as a skin remodelling treatment rather than a filler.

As it spreads, the hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin and stimulates the fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. The improvement you see is your own skin behaving better, not a product sitting underneath it.

What It Actually Does to Your Face

The first thing most patients notice is hydration. The skin holds moisture more effectively and looks less dull and tired, particularly in the areas that tend to go flat first, such as the lower cheeks and the skin in front of the ears.

Over the following weeks, as collagen and elastin production increases, the skin begins to feel firmer to the touch. Fine lines soften because well hydrated, more elastic skin creases less readily. Texture becomes more even. Patients often describe a subtle tightening, most noticeably along the jawline and on the neck, where thin, crepey skin responds particularly well.

The overall effect is that you look rested and healthy rather than treated. Nobody will be able to identify what you have had done, which for many patients is precisely the appeal.

What Profhilo Does Not Do

Profhilo will not restore lost volume. If your cheeks have flattened, your temples have hollowed, or your face has deflated with age, Profhilo cannot rebuild that structure. It works within the skin, not in the deeper tissue planes where volume is lost.

It will not lift skin that has descended. Significant laxity, jowling, or a loss of definition along the jaw needs a treatment that addresses the deeper tissue, such as Endolift, rather than a skin quality treatment.

It will not remove deep static lines, resurface scarring, or treat pigmentation. Each of those needs a different approach.

Being honest about this matters, because Profhilo delivers a genuinely excellent result for the right concern and a disappointing one for the wrong concern. If you are unsure which category you fall into, that is exactly what a consultation is for.

Where It Can Be Used

The face is the most common treatment area, particularly across the cheeks and jawline. Profhilo is also widely used on the neck, where the skin is thin and prone to crepiness, and on the hands, where volume loss and skin thinning tend to show age earlier than the face does.

The décolletage responds well, especially where years of sun exposure have left the skin lined and uneven, and the upper arms are an increasingly popular treatment area for the same reason.

What the Treatment Involves

Profhilo is injected using the BAP protocol, which stands for Bio Aesthetic Points. This involves five specific injection points on each side of the face, chosen because they allow the product to flow naturally through the tissue and because they sit away from major blood vessels.

The appointment takes around thirty minutes. Most patients find it very tolerable, describing a brief stinging sensation as the product is placed rather than pain. Because a relatively large volume is deposited at each point, small raised bumps appear immediately afterwards. These settle within a few hours as the product disperses, and are usually gone by the following morning.

There is no meaningful downtime. Some patients have mild redness or a small bruise at an injection point, but most return to work the same day.

A full course is two sessions spaced four weeks apart. The second session is not optional. The first treatment prepares the skin and the second consolidates the result, and patients who have only one rarely see the full benefit.

The Timeline: What to Expect and When

For the first week or two, the changes are subtle. Hydration improves and the skin looks brighter, but this is not the stage at which you judge the result.

The meaningful improvement arrives between four and eight weeks after the second session, as new collagen and elastin are laid down. This is when firmness and texture change noticeably, and when most patients start hearing that they look well.

Results typically last around six months. Many patients choose to maintain them with a single top up session every six to twelve months, depending on their skin and how they respond. Skin quality treatments work best as part of an ongoing routine rather than a one off, in the same way that skincare does.

Who It Suits

Profhilo works particularly well for patients in their thirties and forties whose facial volume is still good but whose skin has begun to lose its vitality. It is also an excellent maintenance treatment for older patients who have already addressed structure elsewhere and want to improve the quality of the skin sitting over it.

It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have an active skin infection in the treatment area. Anyone with a history of autoimmune conditions or bleeding disorders should discuss this in detail at consultation.

Combining Profhilo with Other Treatments

Profhilo is often at its best as part of a plan rather than on its own. Where volume loss is the primary concern, Sculptra rebuilds structure through collagen stimulation and pairs well with Profhilo for skin quality. Where laxity is the issue, Endolift tightens the deeper tissue. Where texture, scarring, or pigmentation are involved, CO2 laser resurfacing addresses the surface of the skin.
