What Is the Nefertiti Neck Lift?
The Nefertiti neck lift is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that uses botulinum toxin injections to relax the platysma muscle, reducing the appearance of vertical neck bands and producing a smoother, more refined neck profile. It takes its name from the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti, renowned for her distinctively long, elegant neck, a quality the treatment aims to restore in patients where the natural ageing process has begun to alter the neck's appearance.
The platysma is a broad, flat muscle that originates along the lower jaw and runs down the front of the neck to the chest. In younger patients, it lies flat and its edges are not visible through the skin. Over time, as the muscle loses tone and the overlying skin becomes less elastic, the two edges of the platysma can begin to separate and pull away from each other. These edges become the vertical cords, known as platysmal bands, that are visible as rope-like lines running down the front of the neck, particularly when the face is animated or the neck is tensed. In some patients they are visible at rest, and they tend to become more pronounced with age.
Botulinum toxin works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction. When injected into the platysma, it reduces the contractile activity of the muscle, allowing the bands to soften and flatten. The injections are placed at precise points along the length of the visible bands, from the lower jaw down towards the base of the neck, targeting the muscle directly rather than the overlying skin. The result is a reduction in the tension within the bands themselves, causing them to become less prominent and the neck surface to appear smoother and more even.

Results from a Nefertiti neck lift typically last between three and four months, depending on individual factors such as metabolism, muscle strength, and lifestyle. Patients who maintain regular treatment appointments often find that results last progressively longer over time, as the platysma muscle becomes conditioned to reduced activity.

The patients most likely to benefit from the Nefertiti lift are those in whom platysmal pull is a genuine and active part of their concern. These tend to be patients in their late thirties to mid-fifties with good skin elasticity, visible platysmal banding that becomes more pronounced with movement or muscle tension, and mild to moderate early changes at the jawline that have a muscular rather than structural cause.
If you notice that your neck looks noticeably worse when you are stressed, when you clench your jaw, or when you look down, the platysma is likely contributing. These are the patients for whom this treatment was genuinely designed.
Patients with naturally moderate to strong muscle tone tend to respond better than those with very little muscle activity. The mechanism depends on there being a meaningful level of downward pull to reduce. If the platysma is not particularly active, there is less to relax, and therefore less visible change.

Patients with significant skin laxity, excess submental fat, or well-established jowling are not well served by this treatment. These are structural and volumetric changes that Botox cannot address, and pursuing the Nefertiti lift in the hope of correcting them is likely to lead to disappointment and an unnecessary spend.
Patients who are primarily motivated by social media content showing dramatic jawline transformation should proceed with caution. The gap between expectation and reality in these cases is wide, and a responsible consultation will be clear about what is achievable.
Older patients with advanced platysmal banding who have lost significant skin elasticity may also find the results limited. Where the banding has been present for a long time and the overlying skin is very lax, treating the muscle alone does not produce meaningful surface change.
Patients with neurological conditions, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and those with known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin are not suitable candidates. Anyone with a history of dysphagia or swallowing difficulties should discuss this carefully before considering any treatment near the anterior neck.

The Nefertiti neck lift works specifically on the platysmal bands, the vertical cords that become visible in the neck over time as the platysma muscle separates and its edges become more pronounced. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscle fibres responsible for this banding, softening the cords and producing a smoother, flatter neck profile.
The improvement is most noticeable in patients who have visible banding at rest or when the neck is tensed. In these cases, the bands become significantly less prominent, and the neck takes on a cleaner, more relaxed appearance. The result is subtle rather than dramatic, and intentionally so, the goal is a neck that looks naturally smooth, not treated.
It is worth being clear about what the treatment does not do. It will not lift or tighten loose skin, remove excess tissue, or address more advanced changes that have a structural or skin laxity component. Patients with mild to moderate banding tend to see the most satisfying results. Where banding is very pronounced or accompanied by significant skin laxity, Dr. Karwal will discuss this honestly at consultation and advise whether a different approach may be more appropriate.

For the first four hours after treatment, remain upright and avoid touching or applying any pressure to the neck area.
For the rest of the day, avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat such as saunas or hot baths, and alcohol. These can increase blood flow to the area and affect how the product settles.
Avoid massage or professional skin treatments to the neck for at least two weeks following your appointment.
Some redness or small bumps at the injection sites are normal and will resolve within a few hours. Occasional bruising is possible and will settle within a few days.
Results develop gradually over two weeks. Dr. Karwal will review your outcome at your follow-up appointment. If you have any concerns in the meantime, please contact the clinic directly.
