What Are Bunny Lines?

Bunny lines are the diagonal creases that appear on either side of the nose when you smile or scrunch your face. They get their name from the nose-wrinkling expression associated with a rabbit, and while they may seem like a minor detail, many patients find that they become more pronounced over time and begin to bother them, particularly in photographs where the nose appears creased or wrinkled in a way that draws attention.

They are caused by repeated contraction of the nasalis muscle, which runs across the bridge and sides of the nose. With years of smiling, laughing, and natural facial expression, the overlying skin begins to crease in the same place repeatedly, and over time those creases can become etched into the skin even at rest.

For some people, bunny lines are barely visible and cause no concern. For others, particularly those who have already had anti-wrinkle treatment in the upper face, they can become more noticeable. When the surrounding muscles are relaxed, the nasalis muscle's activity stands out more by comparison. This is a pattern we see regularly in clinic and something worth factoring in when planning a full-face treatment approach.

What is a Pebbled Chin?

A pebbled chin, sometimes called an orange peel chin or cobblestone chin, is a texture irregularity on the chin caused by the mentalis muscle contracting excessively during facial expressions and sometimes even at rest. When the mentalis is overactive, it creates a dimpled, bumpy surface on the skin of the chin that can look uneven in photographs and in certain lighting.

Unlike a skin texture concern, a pebbled chin is a muscular issue. The surface of the chin is not intrinsically rough or uneven. It is the repeated or persistent contraction of the underlying muscle that pulls the skin into that dimpled appearance, which is why topical skincare will not address it. Botulinum toxin, placed correctly into the mentalis, will.

Many patients who come to us for chin or jawline filler also mention the pebbled texture of their chin when we talk through their concerns. In some cases, addressing the muscle activity first, or alongside filler, produces a noticeably better overall result. It is one of those details that makes a real difference to how the final outcome looks.

FAQs

  • No. Botulinum toxin takes a few days to begin taking effect, with the full result visible at around two weeks. You will not notice a change immediately after your appointment. We include a two-week review with all treatments so that Dr Karwal can assess the result and make any small adjustments if needed.

  • At Karwal Aesthetics, we use Allergan Botox, which is the original brand of botox.

  • Bunny lines and pebbled chin treatment is available at our Mayfair clinic, located at 15 Dover Street, London W1S 4LP, in the heart of Mayfair, Central London.

  • Treatment for bunny lines involves two small, precise injections of botulinum toxin into the nasalis muscle on each side of the nose. This gently reduces the muscle's activity, softening the contractions that cause the skin to crease. The lines on the nose no longer form to the same degree when smiling, and over time, existing lines at rest may also improve as the skin is no longer being repeatedly folded in the same place.

The injection points are very small, the needles are fine, and the procedure takes only a few minutes. Discomfort is minimal for most patients, and there is no anaesthetic cream required as standard, although it can be applied on request.

  • For a pebbled chin, small amounts of botulinum toxin are injected into the mentalis muscle in the chin. This relaxes the muscle's tendency to contract and dimple, producing a smoother, more even surface. The improvement is particularly noticeable when speaking or making expressions, where the muscle would otherwise be most active, but many patients also notice an improvement in the appearance of the chin at rest.

Dosing and placement for pebbled chin treatment require care. The mentalis is also involved in lower lip support and movement, so over-treating or misplacing the injection can affect the lip. This is a treatment where anatomical knowledge is particularly important, and one of the reasons we recommend seeking treatment with a medically qualified practitioner.

  • For bunny lines, the result is a nose that remains smooth and unlined when smiling, giving the midface a cleaner, more refined appearance. For most patients, existing dynamic lines (those that appear on movement) resolve significantly, and with repeated treatment over time, static lines (those visible at rest) may also soften as the skin is given the opportunity to recover.

For pebbled chin, the result is a chin that looks smoother and more even, particularly during speech and expression, but also increasingly at rest with consistent treatment.

Both treatments produce results that last approximately three to four months on average. This varies between individuals depending on muscle strength, metabolism, and lifestyle factors. A two-week review is included with your treatment, at which point Dr Karwal will assess the outcome and address any fine-tuning if needed.

  • Results for both treatments typically last between three and four months, though this varies between individuals. Muscle strength, metabolic rate, and exercise habits can all influence how long the product remains effective. We generally recommend booking a follow-up appointment before the effect has fully worn off to maintain a consistent result.
