Is Profhilo Worth It?
Profhilo has been one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetic medicine for several years now, and the conversation hasn't died down. If anything, it's become more nuanced. Patients who come to us asking about it tend to fall into two camps: those who've heard it described as a miracle skin treatment, and those who've had it elsewhere and aren't sure why they didn't see more of a result. Both responses make sense, and both usually come down to the same thing — a misunderstanding of what Profhilo actually is and what it's designed to do.
What is Profhilo?
Profhilo is not a dermal filler. It contains no added chemicals, no cross-linking agents, and it doesn't add volume or change the structure of the face. It is a highly concentrated injectable hyaluronic acid treatment — one of the highest concentrations available on the market — that spreads through the tissue after injection and works by stimulating the production of four types of collagen and elastin from within the skin.
The result is not a structural change. It's a quality change. Skin that has become thin, dehydrated, and dull over time gradually becomes plumper, firmer, and more luminous. Patients often describe it as their skin looking like itself, just better — more hydrated, more even, and noticeably more alive.
How does it work?
Profhilo is administered using a fine needle at five specific injection points on each side of the face, typically in the lower and mid-face. These points are strategically placed to allow the product to flow evenly through the tissue, integrating with the skin rather than sitting in one place. The hyaluronic acid remains active in the skin for approximately 28 days, during which time it triggers a regenerative response that continues well beyond that window.
The standard protocol is two sessions spaced four weeks apart. Most patients notice an improvement in skin texture and radiance after the first session, with the full result becoming apparent around four to six weeks after the second. Results typically last up to six months, at which point a maintenance session is recommended.
The treatment itself takes around 15 minutes and requires no downtime.
How does Profhilo compare to other treatments?
This is where patients often get confused, and it's worth being clear. Profhilo, dermal fillers, and skin boosters like polynucleotides and Sunekos are not interchangeable — they do different things.
Dermal fillers add volume and structure to specific areas. Profhilo doesn't do either of those things. It is a bio-remodelling treatment, meaning its purpose is to improve the overall quality, hydration, and resilience of the skin rather than to reshape or lift.
Polynucleotides and Sunekos are also regenerative treatments, but they work differently. Polynucleotides stimulate the skin's repair mechanisms at a cellular level, activating fibroblasts and promoting tissue regeneration. Sunekos combines hyaluronic acid with amino acids to rebuild the extracellular matrix. Profhilo's primary mechanism is hyaluronic acid-driven collagen and elastin stimulation. All three have a role, and in some patients, combinations of these treatments produce significantly better results than any single one alone.
For patients with more significant concerns — deeper lines, volume loss, skin laxity — Profhilo works best as part of a broader treatment plan rather than as a standalone solution. It is not a replacement for fillers, anti-wrinkle treatment, or more intensive procedures like Endolift. But as a foundational treatment for overall skin quality, it is one of the most effective options available.
Is Profhilo suitable for everyone?
Profhilo is suitable for most skin types and tones, and it is one of the more versatile treatments in aesthetic medicine. It works well for patients in their late twenties onwards who are noticing a loss of skin quality, radiance, or hydration, and it is particularly effective for the face, neck, décolletage, and hands.
It is not suitable for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for anyone with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid. Dr Karwal will assess your suitability during your consultation.
Is it worth it?
For the right patient, yes — consistently. Profhilo delivers genuine, visible improvements to skin quality that are difficult to replicate with topical products alone, even excellent medical-grade ones. The results are subtle by design. This is not a treatment that dramatically transforms the face, and patients who come in expecting that will be disappointed. But patients who want their skin to look healthier, more hydrated, and more youthful without looking like they've had anything done tend to be very satisfied.
If you're unsure whether Profhilo is the right starting point for your concerns, a consultation with Dr Arun Karwal at our Mayfair clinic will give you a clear picture of what it can realistically achieve for you — and whether it should be combined with anything else for the best result.
