The Right Way to Layer Skincare
You've invested in great skincare products, but are you applying them in the right order? It's a question that catches a lot of people off guard, and it matters more than you might think. The order in which you layer your skincare directly affects how well each product absorbs, how effectively the active ingredients can do their job, and ultimately, the results you see in the mirror.
At Karwal Aesthetics, we often find that patients are using excellent products but not getting the full benefit simply because of the way they're applying them. Getting your layering right is one of the easiest and most impactful changes you can make to your routine, and it doesn't cost a penny.
Why Does the Order Matter?
Skincare products are formulated with different consistencies, molecular sizes, and active ingredients. If you apply a thick, heavy product before a lightweight one, the lighter product won't be able to penetrate through to the skin. Think of it like getting dressed. You wouldn't put your coat on before your shirt. The same logic applies to your skincare. Thinner, more concentrated products go on first so they can reach the skin directly, and thicker, more occlusive products go on last to seal everything in.
When products are layered correctly, each one works harder. Your actives penetrate more effectively, your hydration lasts longer, and your skin gets the maximum benefit from every single product you're using.
The Correct Skincare Layering Routine
Here is the order Dr Karwal recommends for a thorough morning and evening skincare routine. You don't need to use every single step every time, but understanding the correct sequence means that whatever products you do use, you're applying them in the right order.
Step 1: Cleanse
Every routine starts with a clean canvas. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, pollution, bacteria, and makeup from the skin's surface, allowing everything that follows to absorb properly. In the evening, we recommend double cleansing, starting with an oil-based or balm cleanser to break down makeup and sunscreen, followed by a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is usually sufficient to refresh the skin.
Step 2: Exfoliate (2 to 3 times per week)
Exfoliation removes the build-up of dead skin cells that can make your complexion look dull and prevent your other products from absorbing effectively. Chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs tend to be gentler and more effective than physical scrubs, as they dissolve dead cells without the need for harsh rubbing or scrubbing. This step should always come after cleansing so you're exfoliating clean skin rather than rubbing dirt and impurities deeper into the pores. Exfoliation is not an everyday step. Two to three times a week is enough for most skin types. Over-exfoliating can strip the skin barrier, leading to irritation, sensitivity, and breakouts.
Step 3: Toner
Toning is one of the most commonly skipped steps in a skincare routine, but a good toner can make a real difference. Modern toners are very different from the harsh, alcohol-based formulas of the past. Today's toners are designed to rebalance the skin's pH after cleansing, boost hydration, and deliver a first layer of active ingredients. Applying a toner to freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin allows it to penetrate quickly and prep the skin for the products that follow.
Step 4: Serums
Serums are the powerhouse of your routine. They contain the highest concentration of active ingredients in the lightest, most easily absorbed formula, which is why they go on before anything heavier. This is where you target your specific skin concerns.
Vitamin C is best used in the morning. It's a potent antioxidant that brightens the complexion, protects against environmental damage, and supports collagen production. Applied before your SPF, it provides an extra layer of defence against UV and pollution throughout the day.
Retinol or tretinoin is best used in the evening. These vitamin A derivatives are the gold standard for anti-ageing, promoting cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and improving skin texture and tone. They can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, which is why they should always be used at night and paired with diligent SPF use during the day.
Hyaluronic acid can be used morning and evening. It draws moisture into the skin and helps to keep it plump, hydrated, and smooth. Apply it to slightly damp skin for the best results, as it works by binding water to the skin.
If you're using multiple serums, the general rule is to apply the thinnest, most watery formula first and work up to the thicker ones.
Step 5: Eye cream
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, which is why it often benefits from a dedicated product. Apply your eye cream before your moisturiser, using your ring finger to gently pat a small amount around the orbital bone. Eye creams are typically lighter than face moisturisers and contain targeted ingredients for concerns such as dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines.
Step 6: Moisturiser
Moisturiser is the step that locks everything in. It creates a protective barrier on the skin's surface that seals in the hydration and active ingredients from all the previous steps. Apply your moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp from your serum, as this helps to trap additional moisture for a plumper, more hydrated complexion. Choose a formula suited to your skin type. Lighter, gel-based moisturisers work well for oily or combination skin, while richer creams are better for dry or mature skin.
Step 7: SPF (morning only)
Sunscreen is the final step in your morning routine and arguably the most important product you'll apply all day. It protects your skin from UVA and UVB radiation, which is the leading cause of premature ageing, pigmentation, and skin cancer. SPF goes on last because it needs to form an even, unbroken layer on the surface of the skin to work effectively. Applying other products over the top can disrupt this layer and reduce its protection. At Karwal Aesthetics, we recommend using a minimum of SPF 30 every day, regardless of the weather or season. We stock Medik8 and Obagi SPFs that sit beautifully over your skincare and under makeup.
Morning vs Evening: How Your Routine Should Differ
Your morning and evening routines don't need to be identical, and in fact they shouldn't be. Each serves a different purpose.
Your morning routine is about protection. It should focus on hydration, antioxidant defence, and sun protection. This is when you use your Vitamin C serum, your moisturiser, and your SPF.
Your evening routine is about repair and renewal. This is when you use your more active ingredients such as retinol or tretinoin, as well as any targeted treatments. Your skin does the majority of its repair work overnight, so feeding it the right ingredients in the evening allows them to work in synergy with your body's natural processes. There is no need to apply SPF in the evening.
Common Layering Mistakes to Avoid
One of the most frequent mistakes is applying SPF before moisturiser, or skipping it altogether. SPF must always be the last step in your morning routine to form a proper protective barrier.
Another common error is using too many active ingredients at once. Layering multiple potent actives such as retinol, AHAs, and Vitamin C in the same routine can overwhelm the skin and cause irritation. If you're using retinol in the evening, keep the rest of your evening routine simple and hydrating. Save your Vitamin C for the morning.
Applying products too quickly without allowing each layer to absorb is another mistake that reduces effectiveness. Give each product 30 to 60 seconds to sink into the skin before applying the next one. This prevents pilling and ensures each layer can do its job properly.
You Don't Need to Use Everything Every Day
A good skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated. The essentials are cleansing, moisturising, and SPF. Everything else is an addition that you can build in based on your skin's needs. The important thing is consistency and correct order, not the number of products you use.
